There are so many words floating around labeling our food it can be seriously hard and overwhelming! It can feel like figuring out a calculus problem (former math nerd here!) trying to decipher the labels. Anyone else feel this way figuring out where to save and where to splurge?? I’m filling you in on what actually makes some meat better for you and why we made the switch to high quality meat for our family.
How I Used To Shop
My husband and I are extremely frugal! I used to focus on quantity over quality buying those club packs of cheap cuts. Then, I froze them on my own in smaller portions to feed our family as cheaply as possible while still focusing on whole foods.
Over the past year we’ve dealt with food allergies, and autoimmune disorders in our house. We had to make a lot of changes to our diet. After a bunch of research into ingredients and how they affect our health, I was sold! Grass fed, grass finished and pasture fed meat is where it’s at!
I decided to make the switch, but need to figure out how to do so while still sticking to our grocery budget!
Store bought meat versus a meat delivery?
I will almost always choose buying online and here’s why. I can take time to read ingredients and do research! Standing in the grocery store trying to read ingredients, price compare and figure out what the heck I should be buy is usually a fail for me. Add in two small kids and a pandemic and it’s an extreme sport!
I never really know how fresh meat is in the grocery store. Was it frozen then thawed on the shelf? When did they put it out? Where did the meat actually come from? I love getting frozen food delivered to my house. I know how it was source and how it was raised. When it gets delivered I put it right in my freezer = guaranteed freshness!
