Third Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2025

September 20, 2025      Meg

If you’re anything like me, choosing curriculum each year feels like a mix of excitement and overwhelm. There are so many wonderful resources out there, and sometimes it’s hard to know what will actually work for your kids and your family rhythm. After a few years of trial and error, we’ve found a good groove, and today I’m sharing our third grade homeschool curriculum choices for 2025.

Think of this as us sitting down with a cup of coffee, chatting about what’s working (and why) in our homeschool this year.

Language Arts

  • Grammar: Fix It Grammar Level 1 – This is a gentle introduction to grammar through editing short stories. My third grader enjoys it because it feels like solving a puzzle instead of just doing workbook drills.
  • Writing: Mystery Writing (from Mystery Science) – This has been a fun, creative way to get writing in without the groans. Writing is connected to curiosity and discovery, which keeps my child engaged.
  • Spelling: All About Spelling Level 2 – We’ve had so much success with the All About Reading/Spelling approach. It’s hands-on, mastery-based, and works beautifully with my child’s learning style.
  • Reading: A mix of read-alouds, independent reading books, and novel studies. I love keeping reading rich and literature-based at this age.

Math

  • Math With Confidence – Third Grade
This is one of my favorite homeschool math programs ever. As someone with a math degree, I really appreciate the conceptual, mastery-based approach. The teacher’s guide is open-and-go, making it easy for me, and the games woven into the lessons keep math fun and engaging.

History, Geography & Science

This year we’re diving into an Around the World study with Art Makes Me Smart—and I’m so excited about it! We’ll be exploring countries from each continent, learning about:

  • Geography & landmarks
  • History & cultural traditions
  • Music, art, and food
  • Folk tales & literature
  • Animals and biomes of each region
Frog Life Cycle Nature Study

We’re using the Lily and Thistle Art Makes Me Smart membership for the backbone of our country studies. It’s an art-first approach that brings in culture, geography, and history through engaging projects. My kids retain so much when they connect learning to art!

For science, we’re supplementing with Mystery Science and Evan-Moor Science Centers to build skills alongside our geography and nature studies.

Family-Style Learning

Even though my third grader has more independent work now, we still love family-style learning for read-alouds, art, nature study, and our Around the World unit. My preschooler tags along for much of this, and it’s one of the sweetest parts of our homeschool rhythm.

Why We Chose These Programs

Over the years, we’ve come to value programs that are:

  • Mastery-based (so concepts really stick)
  • Easy to teach (minimal prep for me, open-and-go whenever possible)
  • Engaging & memorable (art, stories, and games make learning stick)

All About Reading and All About Spelling have been wonderful for us because they’re based on the science of reading and are truly effective. Math With Confidence makes teaching math joyful and stress-free. And Lily & Thistle’s Art Makes Me Smart is the perfect balance of low prep but high impact.

Final Thoughts

Every homeschool looks different, but I hope this peek into our third grade homeschool curriculum choices gives you encouragement and maybe sparks some ideas for your own family. If you’ve used any of these resources, I’d love to hear what you think—or if you have a favorite third grade resource, share it below!
