I’ve been wanting to update our gallery wall for so long! The truth is I hung the gallery wall half filled when we moved in. I filled some frames with random pictures, used items from our old house, and never really got around to finishing it. Since becoming a mom and learning more about photography, having pictures of our kids and family in our house has become my favorite way to decorate. I decided it was time for a change and went with a bold but minimalistic gallery wall of black and white personality portraits of my daughter from Pretty In Polka Dots. I can’t wait to add another print with the newest addition to our family next year!
Gallery Wall Personality Portraits: How to Shoot and Edit
I decided to do simple black and white personality portraits shot on a white backdrop, so my daughter’s personality would shine through. I used a professional photo backdrop but you could achieve a similar result using a white wall or by hanging a white sheet. You want to use indirect diffused light from the side so you don’t get harsh light and shadows in your portraits. I edited my pictures using Adobe Lightroom to be black and white. I recommend taking LOTS of pictures. Anytime I’m shooting content I shoot a ton of pictures (sometimes well over 100) to get one good shot that I love. You’ll need high resolution photos, especially if you choose to do large size prints.
Sizing Gallery Wall
It’s important to figure out where you’ll be installing the gallery wall and measure the space you have to determine the number and size of portraits. I based my decision on the size of the wall, the size of the prints, and the spacing I wanted to use between them. I intentionally left room on my wall to be able to expand in the future as my family grows. The more planning you do ahead the more success you’ll have in installing the pictures right the first time. Blue painters tape can be a great way to see your layout and plan for exactly what you want before actually ordering or hanging prints. After careful measuring and planning I chose to do three 36 inch by 23 inch prints space 4 inches apart.
