Summer’s is full swing and whether you’re headed out on vacation or staying home you’re probably reaching for sunscreen most days. It’s important to get out in the morning get a little vitamin D and then use that sunscreen girl!! BUT — pay attention to ingredients because a lot of the sunscreens out there are filled with toxic ingredients that lead to hormone disruption, allergies, and ironically cancer. So I’m sharing what ingredients to avoid and my favorite clean non-toxic sunscreen brands.
Chemical Based Ingredients to Avoid In Your Sunscreen
- Avobenzone
- Ocybenzone
- Octocrylene
- Ecamsule
- Homosaltate
- Octisalate
- Octinoxate
What to look for in a non-toxic sunscreen
First off the active ingredients in your non-toxic sunscreen should be minerals, not chemicals. Mineral sunscreens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are physical blockers and don’t soak into your skin and blood stream like the chemical ingredients do. It’s important to make sure your sunscreen in non-nano particle minerals.
My Favorite Non-Toxic Suncreen for the Face
When I’m wearing makeup I always make sure to apply my Crunchi Sunlight Daily Moisturizing Face Sunscreen. It’s SPF 30, moisurizing, non-greasy and wears perfectly under makeup. It’s reef safe, vegan, gluten free, non-nanoparticle and leaping bunny certified. I wear this year round even when I’m not spending the day in the sun.
If I’m spending the day at the pool I love Babo Botanicals Daily Sheer Tinted Face Sunscreen. It’s more shiny then my crunchy but gives a nice tint and glow when I’m spending the day at the pool or beach and don’t plan on wearing makeup. It’s very clean and very affordable.
I recently tried Time Travelers Daily Face Sunscreen from Solara Suncare and its another great clean option! The formula is nice and it wears well under makeup, but it does leave a slight white cast that I don’t get from Crunchi Sunlight. I love that it includes ingredients to help address past photodamage and plump the appearance of fine lines while also helping to prevent future damage from the sun, digital + environmental aggressors.
My Favorite Non-Toxic Sunscreen For Body
Babo Botanicals has been my go to for sunscreen for the family. I especially love the Babo Botanicals Sheer Zinc Continuous Spray Sunscreen SPF 30. The spray is so convientient when applying sunscreen on kids. The formula rubs in nicely and doesn’t leave white residue.
Badger – SPF 35 Clear Zinc Sport Sunscreen Cream is another great clean option. It’s great for a day at the pool of beach and is a great price!
Solara Sunscreen also offers some great body options too. Their Glow Getter Nutrient Boosted Daily Sunscreen give you a slight glow. It includes a potent mix of caffeine, antioxidants and responsibly sourced mica help tone, illuminate and hydrate while protecting against everyday sun and digital + environmental pollution.
