If you’re like us you’ve been spending A LOT of time staying home exploring your backyard this summer! We’ve been trying to keep things interesting and fun with different activities and in my opinion there’s nothing better then learning through nature and play! We get outside for fresh air and some vitamin . We get hands on learning time and get to spend quality time as a family. You can’t go wrong. What toddler doesn’t love bugs??
Learning With Nature: Insects and Bugs
We’ve have come across a ton of weird bugs this year and this insect study box has been a HUGE HIT!! It has two magnifying viewers so you can examine your discoveries from multiple angles or two people can look at the same time. We love talking about the bugs, learning their names, and talking about their characteristics. We’ve checked out snails, spiders, and caterpillars, You can even use it to get an up close look at other things you find in nature like leaves, flowers, or pine cones.
Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt Bingo
We try to go for a walk everyday. To keep things interesting we love taking turns pointing out things we see; bugs, animals, flowers. I try to fit a little learning in everywhere by talking about the colors of the flowers, counting the number of pinecones, talking about the texture of the stones. It’s also fun to turn it into a game. You can do a nature walk scavenger hunt or bingo game and try to find as many things on the list in one walk, by the end of the week, or by the end of summer. It makes walking and exploring even more fun!
Books About Bugs and Nature
I love having books to tie in our hands on learning. I also love rotating different collections throughout the year so she doesn’t get bored. These are some of our favorite books for summer and nature.
