Baby items are so expensive! They grow out of things super fast and since babies all like different things what works for one might not work for another. I’m sharing some of my favorite mom hacks to save money on baby items and get baby must haves for less.
Who else has checked out influencers must have baby recommendations and then headed to shop their post and felt an immediate …. ouch! Baby items are expensive!! I was so fortunate to get a lot of what I thought were must haves from my baby shower with my first baby.
Truth – 99% of the things I thought I absolutely needed I never used.
I wish I would have asked for diapers, gift cards, and endless zippered pajamas in every size because those were my real must haves during the first year.
It’s so heart crushing to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest and greatest baby item to find out your baby hates it or grows out of it in a matter of months.
Here are my top tips for saving as a mom of two.
1. Buy as you go, start with necessities
Learn from my mistake as a first time mom you don’t need every type of baby holding device known to man. There are a few basics and everything else you can add as you go.
You need somewhere for your baby to sleep, some clothes (zippered pajamas), and lots of diapers.
I shared the baby items I actually used and loved in this post.
2. Buy used
You can find deals on everything from baby gear to baby clothes. Baby’s tend to grow out of things really quickly.
Most baby items barely get used and sell second hand for a fraction of the price.
You can find amazing deals on facebook marketplace for larger items. I love shopping at poshmark and ebay for used baby clothes.
3. Check Amazon Warehouse
I scored so many great deals on baby and kid items through Amazon warehouse. The used very good or like new items usually say there may be damage to the packaging. In my experience they are usually just returns that have been restocked or have some damage to the packaging.
4. Use Store Brands When Possible
Check out this diaper price comparison!!
Amazon Mama Bear Diapers: $24.59
Pampers: $51.90
You can save 20% on whatever brand you choose using subscribe and save.
5. Make your own baby food.
Pouches are great for on the go but they are expensive. You can easily make your own purees at home for much less and baby led weaning is a super easy way to give your baby a version of what the rest of the family is already eating. Need more help with starting solids? Check out my process here.
6. Use You FSA Account and Insurance Coverage
Some baby items are covered by insurance and many more qualify for purchase using your FSA or HSA account. Check out my list here!
7. Make a Registry
When you create an Amazon Baby Registry you can save in three ways. One people will want to welcome your bundle of joy with a sweet gift. Give them a link to your baby registry so they can get you something you need and want. Amazon send you a gift with baby items when you create a registry. Once baby arrives you can cash in on additional saving to buy the rest of the things on your list.
